Bench the Nymph Rod…30th August

August 31, 2020

The sudden, seasonal change in the weather usually signals the beginning of the end for the Trout season. It’s going to be shorter than usual this year so I figured we should try and make the most of what’s left of it.

Hopefully, there will be plenty of time to fish nymphs over the winter so having recently invested in a new DT line and after watching a few chalk stream videos over the last few days, I decided to go ‘dry fly only‘ for yesterday’s outing.

Furthermore, I would restrict myself to the ‘upstream dry fly only’ presentations demanded on some of the U.K.’s poshest rivers, just in case I ever get an invitation to fish one!

The Wye was carrying a little more water than usual and there was a slight tinge to it. Yesterday was also cool and overcast but there was at times, significant insect activity just below and on the surface that had some big but fussy Trout feeding high in the water column.

There were many unsuccessful fly choices and several clumsy presentations but this was some of the most challenging and rewarding fly fishing I’ve done for a while.

A sip of port to celebrate my mums birthday. Note the rising fish in the background!
