Blankety Blank! … 25th Feb

March 2, 2019

I’m often asked if I ever “Blank” when fishing. The answer is obviously yes … occasionally, BUT there is usually a really good reason!

If you have visited the blog before then you will be well aware of the catalogue of excuses that I have at my disposal.

Today, I didn’t catch a solitary fish but on these (very) rare occasions, you can probably learn as much if not more than on those days when you catch a fish every cast. It is all too easy to turn up at the river and select a fly and a set up that ‘worked last time I was here’ without taking the time to analyse what’s going on around you.

Truth be told, I wasn’t too disappointed as it was just great to be back on the river but it did really make me think about whether the blank was “my fault” OR (as regularly quoted) just down to the conditions.

My conclusion for todays visit was that it probably was my fault as I had lazily turned up at the river for a couple of hours between chores and hadn’t really focussed on what I might need to do in order to catch a Grayling.
The result though was a lovely hour and a half on a beautiful river that got the brain back into gear. Blanking ‘aint so bad!

The beautiful but on this occasion, unyielding river Goyt
