It’s in the blood … 8th July

July 10, 2017

Fish farmer Sean was already a keen and accomplished course and sea fisherman but the delicacy of fly fishing had always appealed to him. With a trip to New Zealand on the horizon and a fly rod that will easily fit into his luggage, he was eager to learn the casting and presentation skills that might stand him in good stead on any river in the world.

As I expected, his focus and attention to detail were challenging and rewarding for us both. One of the many highlights was Seans first fly-caught Grayling that simply ‘hammered’ his perfectly presented dry fly.

After mastering dry fly presentation in some very tricky water, we went on to fishing ‘The Duo’ using the aptly named New Zealand dropper method. Again we were quickly into fish and the method showed Sean just how great it is for finding fish when there is little happening on the surface.

With these newly acquired skills and his natural fish whispering abilities, you have to be concerned for those unsuspecting Kiwi fish!
