Bugs on the bottom….14th January 2018

January 14, 2018

A relatively dry spell has allowed the Dee to fall steadily over the last few days. Today it was at a good height but with yet more rain forecast for the rest of the week, I HAD to try for the years first Grayling.

The bitterly cold wind put paid to any thoughts of dry fly or even duo fishing so I opted to trawl the bottom for decent fish.

The first one was small but very welcome and as he came on the second cast, I thought I might be in for a bumper day.

That wasn’t the case and after my initial success, the fish proved hard to find. That said, there were a few that made the search worthwhile.

A bronze-tinted Grayling from a slower stretch
A pewter Grayling from the faster water
The first Grayling of 2018
A beaded Hydropsyche nymph to get the cast down
Very cold today…
But not as cold as this Salmon which would have weighed around 14lbs!
