Come On In, The Water’s Fine…26th April

April 29, 2019

Without doubt the most rewarding part of what I do is helping flyfishers take their skills to the next level.

A recent case was fly fishing novice, Jona. He was coming up to fish the river Dee for the first time with good friends Nev and Simon.

However, Nev and Simon were already accomplished anglers and regularly fish the Dee so they all felt that newcomer Jona would benefit from a few hours with a guide.

It wasn’t going to be an easy Dee baptism but Jona was keen to learn and must have asked 1000 questions, which I don’t mind at all!

The mornings intermittent wind and rain ruled out fishing on the surface so after a casting tune up, we opted for a single nymph and an indicator. Jona soon grasped the concept and was rewarded with an early but small Wild Brownie, his first from the Dee! There were a few more small fish before he caught his first proper Dee Wild Brown Trout.

It was during this epic battle that I saw his eyes glaze over and I knew that he too was now hooked!

After lunch we changed location and immediately spotted some rising fish! A quick refresher on the mornings casting lesson and we were into both Brownies and out of season Grayling on the dry fly. A real surprise given the conditions.

Jona has already made several purchases so I feel that Nev, Simon and myself owe his wife a huge apology as she may be seeing a little less of him!

Now, THATS a Trout!
