Late, Early Season Trout…5th May

May 8, 2018

On Saturday, I finally got my first chance of the season to target the Brown Trout of the river Dee. I was again indebted to the chauffeur and to show my respect and appreciation, I sat in the front and told her that today she could dispense with the cap and gloves.

A bright, lightly breezy day with the river at good height provided the perfect early season challenge with Grannom, Olives, Alder flies and some huge Stoneflies in the air.

We took some nice Trout and some very lively OOS Grayling on dry flies before the sun got too bright and the surface activity subsided.

At that point we switched to a duo rig and this produced the best Trout of the day. Chiara initially hooked it but she handed the rod to me as the fish had become tangled in some weeds and she feared it was yet another big OOS Grayling.

As soon as it was free and I could feel it was a decent Trout I offered the rod back but it was declined!

It was ultimately, a cracking Trout and although it graced my net momentarily, the catch definitely goes to Chiara.

A quality Dee Brownie
