River Goyt … 29th March

March 29, 2019

My 2hour casting lesson made such impressive progress earlier that I decided to reward myself with a couple of hours fishing on the River Goyt. My first trip this year, at the end of Grayling season, was fruitless and the first hour of todays visit was exactly the same.

Although the river had dropped considerably over the last few days, it was still fairly high, slightly coloured and freezing cold. The sun was also dazzlingly bright and with no insects about at all, I figured that the deeper, shaded and steadier water might be best to swim a nymph through.

Eventually, I hooked this years first fish from the river Goyt, a feisty, battle scarred, Urban Wild Brown Trout that tested my rusty, under-tree fish fighting skills to the limit. The session ended with a cracking out of season Grayling and a pleasurable drive home on the brand new bypass which looks set to make my journey to and from the rivers much, much easier. Excellent!

Even in the shade, this Wild Brownie’s colours are stunning.
Today’s most productive water
Beautiful but no Brownies.
